Young Mutants in Love Page 2
The other woman actually made it look good. On Cacy, it had hung loosely and now it wrapped around the new body attractively. The spaghetti straps held a multi-colored dress that fell to mid-thigh. It was designed to fall straight down, but these new breasts fought that imposed limitation. Cacy took a moment to admire the way that she looked. It wasn't a situation she experienced very often. She found a pair of flip flops that would fit and ran out the door. She just hoped it wasn’t too cold out.
Chapter 3
Gavin couldn’t understand what was taking Cacy so long. He’d gotten off the phone with her almost half an hour ago. He'd started pacing after five minutes. Gavin noticed a difference in how people saw him. Half a dozen girls had tried to get his attention while he was waiting which was five more than had ever tried to reach out to him in his entire life. The worst part is that if Cacy had changed, he wouldn't know who to look for. It was a large campus, so there were many faces that he didn't recognize anyway.
"Gavin?" a tall blond woman asked as she approached him.
"Cacy?" he asked back. "How did you know it was me?"
"Regardless of the other changes, your hair is still the same."
"So we both changed a lot, didn't we?" Gavin asked.
"I wasn't sure I'd find something to wear here," Cacy admitted.
"I had to go with sweats," Gavin agreed as he picked up his right foot. "None of my shoes fit, and I had to settle for these flip flips."
"It could be worse," Cacy laughed, "If you'd changed any more, you would have to run around naked."
"At least no one recognizes me, so they wouldn't know it was me," Gavin joked back.
"How could this have happened?" Cacy mused.
"I think it had something to do with that streak in the sky last night, but without more details, I can't explain what." Gavin muttered.
"So do you like your new look?" Cacy asked as she put her hand on his shoulder.
"I still haven't adjusted to it," Gavin admitted. "It is starting to grow on me though. What about you?"
"I can't deny that I have wondered about having curves, but this is too much. I don't think I'll ever get used to it." Cacy groaned.
"You look beautiful," Gavin offered.
"You're going to make me blush," Cacy giggled.
"Did you just giggle?" Gavin wondered.
"I think that I did," Cacy answered with a confused look on her face. "I can't remember the last time I giggled."
"It seems there are more strange things in the works for us," Gavin mused. "Let's go for a walk."
Cacy didn't comment, she just stood up and walked beside him. There wasn't any conversation, but their hands were drawn to each other. Before they were out the door, they were holding hands. Neither of them noticed this until they were out of the building and several blocks away.
"When did we start holding hands?" Cacy asked.
"Last night," Gavin answered casually.
"I mean, just now. We weren't holding hands at the mail room. Now we are."
"I don't remember," Gavin said with a confused tone. "It's just like last night. It feels comfortable to hold your hand."
"Yes," Cacy agreed, "there's something natural about it."
They walked down the street hand in hand. They casually chatted about the town and the sights they saw.

While Cacy was walking down the street with Gavin, her eyes were darting everywhere. She couldn't seem to keep her attention focused on anything for very long. There were so many things to see. However, she was still able to focus on what Gavin was saying.
Then Cacy noticed a little girl playing on the sidewalk on the other side of the road while her mother was talking to another woman. The girl had short brown hair and was wearing a purple dress because the weather was still warm despite it being February. She had a ball that she was bouncing. The ball slipped out of the girl’s control and started bouncing into the street. The little girl followed it.
Cacy watched as the world slowed down. She wasn’t sure how she could get across the street in time, but she decided she had to try to do something to save that girl. She let go of Gavin’s hand and started running into traffic. The cars seemed to be standing still and she was able to get around all of them. She grabbed the girl and the ball and deposited her beside her mother.
“You should keep an eye on her,” Cacy suggested in a strange voice. “She might get out in the road.”
Cacy looked across the street, but she didn’t see Gavin, there was just a tall girl with long red hair standing where she had left him. That was when she noticed that her body felt different again. She looked down and saw she was wearing a sweat suit and her feet were bare. She reached up and felt short hair on her head. The world slowed down again, and she ran back to where Gavin must have been waiting.
“Did you miss me?” she asked.
“What?” Gavin started. “Who are you? What happened to my voice? I have breasts? What is going on here?”
“One question at a time,” Cacy insisted as she took Gavin’s hand. “Just keep walking and try to look natural.”
* * *
Gavin was having trouble walking in a natural way. Cacy had managed figure it out even though her body had changed so much, but this was a more significant change for Gavin. His breasts wiggled strangely with every step and his hips swayed in ways that made each step an adventure in chaos. He was just glad that Cacy hadn't been wearing heels. He definitely would have broken Cacy's neck with those on his feet.
"Where are we going?" Gavin asked.
"Back to my place," Cacy answered.
"What are we doing when we get there?" Gavin wondered.
"Getting my car," Cacy explained. "I want to go back to that field and see if there are any clues there."
"That's a good idea," Gavin agreed, "maybe we can find a way back into our own bodies too." Gavin suggested.
Cacy didn't answer. She just kept leading him down the road. Everything seemed so slow. They would never get to the car. They would never figure out anything.
"The keys are in the pocket on the front of that dress," Cacy instructed. "You can meet me there."
With those instructions, Cacy disappeared. Gavin assumed that she had started running, but he couldn't see her to confirm his suspicions. With nothing else to do, he kept walking. A couple of blocks later, Gavin realized his mistake-he didn't know where Cacy lived or even what kind of car she drove. There was no way he could catch up with her either.
Perhaps if Cacy could run at super speeds, he could as well, so he started running down the street. That didn't last very long because he discovered two things. First, this body definitely couldn't run at faster-than-normal speeds. Second, large breasts were not meant for running, at least not without some kind of bra.
Did you ever read Life, the Universe and Everything? In that book, Arthur Dent learns the secret of flying. Step One: you throw yourself at the ground. Step two, you miss. When Gavin had read those words, he had laughed at them, but now he was experiencing them first hand. He tripped and started falling towards the ground, and then missed. He was flying. His long red hair was flowing in the breeze and for the first time in his life, Gavin felt like he was doing something natural even though flying certainly couldn't be considered natural for any human.
After trying out a few barrel rolls and some other flying tricks, Gavin started flying towards the field where all of this might have started.
Chapter 4
Cacy couldn't understand what was taking Gavin so long. She’d run around this tree 7,894 times since she had gotten here, and that was after she’d started counting. She'd been running for over an hour at high speeds, and she wasn't feeling the least bit tired or sore, although Gavin’s flip flops hadn’t withstood the run. She was feeling a bit hungry. Gavin probably hadn't eaten yet today. She would have to talk to him about that. Perhaps she had time to run for a bite of something. Then she looked up and saw something approaching in the sky.
/> She stopped running to get a better look, and as the object drew closer, Cacy realized that it was her body with long red hair. It was Gavin, and he was flying.
"Hey, Gavin," she shouted, "What are you doing up there with my body?"
Gavin swooped to the ground and landed gracefully. Cacy wondered if she could have landed that well if she were in his body, and decided the answer was “no.”
"Did you see me?" Gavin crowed. "I was in the air. I was flying."
"I noticed," Cacy commented."How did it happen?"
"I threw myself at the ground and missed," Gavin reported with a giant grin.
"So I should start calling you Arthur now?"Cacy giggled.
"No, I think I'm fine with Gavin," he replied, "but what happens now? Are we stuck like this?"
"I'm no expert on the acquisition of super powers," Cacy snapped.
"Let's try to remember what happened when we switched," Gavin suggested.
"We were walking down the street," Cacy started. "We were holding hands when I noticed that little girl moving towards the street. She would have gotten run over."
"You let go of my hand and disappeared," Gavin reported. "Then I saw you on the other side of the street in my body."
"So what happens if we hold hands again," Cacy asked.
She reached out and took his hand in hers. Nothing happened. Then she wished that she were in her own body, and she was. She let go of Gavin's hand and spun around.
"So we can change bodies," Gavin began, "do we have powers in our own bodies?"
Cacy tried to run and tripped over her own feet. She tried walking through the tree and bumped her head. She tried flying, but hit the ground in a groaning pile instead. She could see that Gavin was trying his best to make something happen as well, but it didn't look like either of them was going to have any positive results.
"I think we know the answer," Cacy groaned as she picked herself up from the groun.
"I think you're right," Gavin agreed. "It's a shame though."
"What is?"Cacy asked.
"I was hoping I could fly in my body too. It really is the best sensation,” Gavin explained as he pretended he was flying.
"Running was better," Cacy decreed.
"You're wrong," Gavin countered as he started pacing in front of the tree, "but that isn't important right now. We have other things to worry about."
"What do you have in mind?" Cacy questioned.
"I want to find out more about our powers," he explained. "There are so many things to discover."
"We also have to decide what to do with them," Cacy added.
"And how to explain what's happened to us," Gavin concluded.
"That's a tall order," Cacy joked indicating with her hand just how much both of them had grown overnight.
"It's not more than we can handle, though," Gavin laughed. "After all, we are the world's first superheroes."
"Who says we're heroes?"Cacy asked with what she hoped was a malicious grin.
"You just want to hide out from the world?" Gavin demanded.
"No, I was curious how serious you were about this. Can we get your body something to eat before we do anything? We’re starving.”
"That's probably a good idea.” Gavin agreed. "Give me your hand."
They grabbed hands and Cacy saw the world shift again. She was back in Gavin's body, and she could feel the desire to run building inside of her. Before she could start running, her body was lifted into the air. At first she felt panic rising, but soon she started to enjoy the ride. She couldn't deny that flying had a certain appeal. However, there had to be a way to show Gavin that running was just as good if not better.
"Where are we going?" Gavin shouted.
"Let's go to my place," Cacy suggested, "I've got food. We can cook something or other."
Gavin didn't answer; he just flew back towards campus.
Chapter 5
After a simple lunch consisting of ham and Swiss cheese sandwiches on rye bread, they came up with a plan. While they were eating they developed a super-power scavenger hunt. Each item on the list would test a specific aspect of what they thought their powers could involve. They made sure the list had an equal number of items and difficulty. Then they joined hands and switched bodies and left on their individual adventures.

Cacy ran out the door and down the street. Her first goal was to run to the state border that was close to one hundred miles away. Cacy opted to take the highway since with her new power she didn't have to worry about the cars that were speeding down the road. They were just more turtles she could run around without them knowing she was there. A minute later, she was at the state border and trying to decide which item on the list to do next. She rushed back to her house and made the return trip in twenty-nine seconds. She glanced at the list and started running for Cobb's Lake. It was a small body of water near the college, but it would do nicely.
Cacy didn't run at her fastest speed because she was worried about creating a sonic boom, since it seemed like the more she used her powers, the faster she could run. Perhaps even enough to allow her next task. At Foster's Lake, she stopped long enough to look around for any spectators. A part of her wanted to show off what she could do, but that wouldn’t be a good idea just yet. There wasn't anyone around and that would be ideal for what she was going to do next. It was time for the experiment.
Cacy ran around the lake several times building up her speed and determination. When she felt comfortable, she started speeding toward the lake. The goal was to run on the surface of the water, and it worked. Cacy had run across Cobb’s Lake without a single drop on her feet. She tried it again without building any speed and the result was the same. Then she got daring and tried to stay still on the surface by only moving her feet. That was less successful, but only a little water stuck to her feet. Perhaps with practice that wouldn't happen either.
Now it was time for the hardest and most unlikely of goals. Cacy ran back to her house and found a wall that didn't look very thick. Then she started vibrating her arm. She pushed against the wall, but her hands stopped when she got near it. Cacy pulled her hand back and tried vibrating faster. This time her hand was able to push into the wall. She didn't try to go any further because she didn’t like the feeling, but she knew that it was possible.
After her success, Cacy took a seat and waited to see how Gavin did with his challenges

Gavin thought about how he was going to run his tests. First thing was to check his elevation. He walked out of the door and flew straight up. The air was getting thinner, and Gavin expected it to have that effect him, but he was able to go up into the clouds and beyond them before he decided that he'd gone far enough for this particular test.
Next he flew towards the ocean. They were about 300 miles from the shore and Gavin figured that would be a good destination. He kept high in case he broke the sound barrier so that it wouldn't affect anything on the ground. He was able to push his speed and made the round trip in around an hour. He might have done it faster, but he got distracted since he couldn’t help enjoy the view without an airplane window in the way.
His final task was to see how much he could carry if there was a need. He'd already carried his own body without difficulty, so he decided to take a trip to the campus gym. Fortunately no one working there asked him about his student I. D. since even if Cacy was carrying one, she didn't look like that photo anymore. He went to the weights and tried lifting them. He quickly learned that this body didn't come with super strength. However, he was able to lift weights in the air when he floated just an inch above the ground. He quit testing after floating five hundred pounds and headed back to Cacy's.

Cacy was already home and waiting for Gavin when he arrived.
"How did it go?" she asked.
"Really well," he answered. "What about for you?"
"I can't complain about the results," Cacy bragged as she reclined in her chair.
"So what do we do now?" Gavin asked as he ran his hands through is long red hair. "Can we be heroes or do we hide our powers?"
"I don't know about you," Cacy admitted, "but I love having super speed. I'll fight crime just to run fast."
"I feel the same way about flying," Gavin agreed. "We can't stay here, though."
"Why not?"
"We can't be ourselves, at least the old selves," Gavin stated as he spread his arms and indicated his new body. "We don't look like us, and there's no way we can explain the changes."
"That makes sense," Cacy conceded. "Where do we go?"
"New York City is the place all the super heroes in the comics seem to go," Gavin pointed out.
"I've always wanted to go there," Cacy stated. "When do we leave?"
"As soon as we can get packed and loaded," Gavin insisted.
"You have a truck, right?"
"Yeah," Gavin confirmed.
Before Gavin finished the word, Cacy had disappeared. Moments later he felt a strong wind all around the apartment and boxes that piled in front of his eyes. The wind settled down and Cacy stopped running.
"Sorry," she apologized. "I probably should have warned you. Everything is ready to go. We just need to load my boxes in your truck."
"I guess that means we leave tonight," Gavin laughed.
Chapter 6
Keeping up with the riff raff on the streets of New York City wasn't hard, but there never seemed to be an end to them. After arriving at the city, Cacy took the name Diz when she was in Gavin’s body, a reference to a newspaper article about how she was "dizzyingly fast," and Gavin, when he was in Cacy’s body, had decided to use Karis, his grandmother's name, because it meant 'hope.' There were a few problems getting started, like finding a place to live and actually being able to afford living in the city. Cacy and Gavin both found jobs at a restaurant that kept them free of constraints during the evenings and close by if an emergency turned up.
